The European Union is a political and economic union of 27 countries in Europe. EU members are subject to privileges and obligations within this political union.
Each of the EU countries is bound by common legislative and judicial institutions and a standardized legal system. EU policies aim to have a single internal market and free movement of capital, services, goods, and people. In addition, due to EU policies, all European Union members must come to a unanimous decision on foreign affairs and defense issues.
The EU aims to ensure freedom, democracy, human rights, equality, human dignity, and the rule of law. Its first objective is maintaining peace, justice, freedom, and social security among EU members.
The European Union was established on 1 November 1993 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Before 1993, some European countries established the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957. Members of this economic cooperation in 1957 were France, Luxembourg, Belgium, West Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. This economic cooperation has grown into the European Union, and the last state to join the Union was Croatia in 2013.
